Top 11 Ways to Get Your Car Ready for Spring by Danny's Upholstery
Top 11 Ways to Get Your Car Ready for Spring by Danny’s Upholstery
Winter sweaters and boots have been packed away just in time for shorts and flip-flops. Does your vehicle benefit from the same “Spring Cleaning” as your home? Warm weather means long weekend getaways and even longer vacation road trips, so take a moment to read the following tips from Danny White, master upholsterer and owner of Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach.
In some cases, you'll be able to perform these actions yourself. Others are best done by a mechanic as part of a tune-up. Some will help your vehicle look better. Most will help it perform more efficiently and get better gas mileage. If you need interior seat repairs, want custom seat covers, are thinking of replacing the carpet or your headliner is falling down, call Danny’s Upholstery at 757-363-5889. Danny’s is Your One Stop Upholstery Shop serving the Hampton Roads area for over 33 years.
1. Visually inspect interior and exterior for repairs and custom changes.
This time of year is a great time to repair seat upholstery or replace carpet if needed. Have you always wanted to customize or “trick out” the interior with custom or new upholstered seat covers? Is your headliner falling down or torn? Do you need a seat or frame repair? Danny’s Upholstery is here to meet your needs and make your dreams come true. Give Danny a call at 757-363-5889 or since it is easier for him to provide an accurate estimate by seeing your auto, stop by our stop. We are open M-S, see hours below.
2. Get rid of road salt on the undercarriage.
Road salt can damage your vehicle by eating away at its undercarriage. Use a garden hose with as much water pressure as your system can muster to loosen winter grime and salt. Or, if you have a movable lawn sprinkler that's low enough, set that under the vehicle to wash away what you can't reach. Did you know that Danny’s Upholstery is located next to Green Clean Auto Car Wash at the corner of Independence Blvd and Pleasure House Rd.? Stop by our shop at 4904 Rutherford Rd, Virginia Beach for a free estimate.
3. Check the tires.
Tire pressure changes about 1 pound per square inch for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit change in outside temperature, so it's important to check tire pressure after weather changes. Check your owner's manual for the recommended pressure for your tire, and never exceed that. Always check pressure when the tires are cold, since driving even a couple of miles to the gas station can provide a false reading. Higher pressure generally results in improved steering response and fuel economy, but a stiffer ride, and it wears out the tread in the center. Under inflation generally provides a smoother ride, but it causes tires to wear out at the sides. It also wastes gas because tires need more power to push the vehicle.
4. Check wiper blades.
Your wipers work hard all winter removing dirt and debris, including salt spray. Since the life expectancy of a wiper blade is six months to a year, check that the blades are making full contact with the windshield and have not dried out. Don't wait for a heavy spring or summer rainstorm to discover your blades aren't performing properly. Also, refill the wiper fluid tank.
5. Rotate the tires.
This is a relatively simple car care procedure that will extend the tread life of your tires, and should be done roughly every 5,000-10,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for exact intervals. A good rule is to rotate tires after every oil change. Many oil change establishments offer tire rotation or check to see if your tire dealer offers free rotation throughout the life of your tires. Mileage restrictions can apply.
6. Change the oil and oil filter.
Some car manufacturers recommend changing to a heavyweight oil to help the engine perform more efficiently during hotter weather. Most cars now have recommended oil grades of 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 — your owner's manual will tell you which. Change the oil filter each time you change the oil, since it's obvious that a dirty filter won't keep the new oil clean.
7. Change the air filter.
The air filter prevents dust and other impurities from getting into the combustion chambers of the cylinders, resulting in wasted gas and weaker engine performance. According to the Car Care Council, replacing a clogged filter can improve mileage by as much as 10 percent. The time-honored way to check for dirt is to hold the filter up to the light, but since many new filters show light when dirty, or show no light when clean, it is more reliable to change the air filter every six months, and more often in dusty locations.
8. Flush and fill your cooling system.
This is cheap insurance against engine failure. The Car Care Council recommends flushing every two years, or 24,000 miles for most vehicles. Simply draining your radiator is not enough; you need to flush the system with a radiator flush product, not just plain water, to remove stubborn rust, grease and sediment. Then, refill with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. (If you live in a more severe climate, increase the percentage of coolant to about 70.)
9. Check the radiator and gas caps.
A snug radiator cap helps raise the cooling system pressure, giving added protection against boiling over. Radiator caps don't last forever, so replace yours whenever you flush the cooling system. Pressure recommendations vary, so get the right cap for your vehicle model. With gas at record prices, be sure there's a tight seal on the gas cap, too, to prevent that high-priced octane from vaporizing. Nearly 20 percent of vehicles have gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing altogether, wasting some 147 million gallons of gas every year.
10. Check the battery and spark plugs.
Make sure battery posts and connections are secure and free of corrosion. Spark plugs fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles. That's a lot of heat and wear and tear in the form of electrical and chemical erosion. Dirty spark plugs cause misfiring, which wastes fuel. If you're planning a long trip, consider replacing the battery and spark plugs if they are more than two years old.
11. Clean the compartments and car interior.
Appearances are important, no matter what the season. Discard the debris that's been hibernating under the seats all winter, then attack the interior with the most powerful vacuum cleaner you can find. Remove the floor mats to vacuum or wash outside the car. Open the trunk, remove the spare tire and jack and vacuum here, too. Before returning the spare, check its pressure. Most likely it will need air, so remember to do that the next you time you fill the tank. Road dust, coffee stains and fingerprints have no appeal any time of the year, so after vacuuming, use a spray vinyl cleaner and a soft cloth on the dashboard, steering wheel, door panels and seats. That also helps protect against cracking, sun damage and fading. A good household upholstery cleaner is fine for fabric seats; for leather seats, follow manufacturer's recommendations. Next is an aerosol silicone spray to treat the weather stripping around the outside of doors, windows and the trunk. Be sure to wipe away the excess.
Whew — all done! Finally, you're ready to wash and wax. Ordinary dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water and a clean, soft sponge will do nicely for the washing, using a different sponge for the body and the tire rims. Then buff dry to a sparkle worthy of spring sunshine, apply a protective coat of wax if necessary and treat yourself to a leisurely ride. You've earned it!

Customize Your Car Interior By Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach
Customize Your Car Interior by Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach
So you have a car you want to make all your own and you want to personalize the auto upholstery. Your car could be a vintage hand-me-down from your grandparents, your modest semi-used starter car with great sentimental value, or even that hot new import you had shipped in. You love it, but you just don't want it to look like it's just rolled off the assembly line, you want a subtle custom interior per your specifications and taste.
Where to start? Research first, try searching online, search for a master craftsman with a local upholstery shop that you can trust. Most upholstery shops have online sites where you can look at previous upholstery projects. Many offer free estimates, but remember the upholsterer needs to see the car in order to give the most accurate pricing and ensure you are getting the fabric and customization you desire.
Since you are thinking of a customized car interior, Danny’s Upholstery can help you select unique car seat cover designs, cool car interior colors, stitching and more.
Here are a few custom car interior tips from Danny White, owner of Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach.
Few things look stranger than a custom job with mismatched interiors and exteriors. Make a list of areas you have considered redoing. Keep in mind, many upholstery shops will work within your allotted budget. Most custom interiors can be done in stages. A lustrous, ultramodern body does not go well with fuzzy dice and leopard-print seat covers; it is good to remember you spend most of your time enjoying the car from the inside. So when planning how your car will look, take a look at it from the outside to make sure that when you customize your cars interior everything is in harmony.
Now that you have an idea of how you want your car to look, it is time to start with the exciting choices. Exert your creativity by choosing the fabric (cloth or vinyl are popular choices and come in a variety of colors) you will be using for your cars interior. Pick a main color or theme for your interior and consider it for your carpet, door panels, headliner and/or seat covers. Danny’s Upholstery has a wide assortment of choices for custom interiors colors, fabrics and designs. Now is the time to decide whether you want to go custom or restore to original. Danny’s Upholstery is located at 4904 Rutherford Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. We are open Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday’s from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Stop by our shop for a free estimate and to browse through the samples and see what you like for your custom car upholstery.
Additional hours are available by appointment. Evening and weekend estimates, pick ups and deliveries are also available for your convenience. We can be reached by calling 757-363-5889.

Is Your Car a Mess? Organize in 5 Easy Steps by Danny's Upholstery
Is Your Car a Mess? Danny’s Upholstery offers tips to Organize Your Car in Five Steps
Do you avoid driving with friends in your car? Do you first have to clean off the seat or the floor — or both? Maybe it’s time to clean out and clean up!
Many people spend more time in their cars than in most rooms of their homes, yet they neglect their auto interior when it comes to regular "housekeeping." When it gets really messy, organizing your car can seem as overwhelming as keeping a closet in order. In the past, I know I have “cleaned” out my car, just to throw all the junk in my trunk and glovebox! So Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach took some time to search out ways to Clean Up and Keep the “Junk out of your Trunk”!
Step one: Sort and clean up (make sure you have a garbage bag)
Take everything out of the car, glovebox, door pockets, consoles and car seats. You will be surprised what you will find once you get those car seats out. Don't forget to remove all items the trunk and cargo area!
Chances are you'll find all kinds of trash to throw out. Organize the rest of the items into three piles: items you use all the time, things you use occasionally and emergency/car maintenance items. Whatever doesn't fall into these categories should be stored in your home or garage.
Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Many of us find ourselves driving up to our mailboxes or going straight to our cars after checking the mailbox. Break this habit and this will save you the hassle of missing bills and piles of junk mail in your car.
Step two: Analyze
Ask yourself, "How do I use my car?" Do you need to keep work items or samples on hand in your truck or cargo area? Do you need room for groceries? Do you transport clients? Are you a soccer mom or have small children in car seats? Do you work from your vehicle?
What are you always struggling to find? Tools or Files, a Pen and Note pad, Snacks or Tissues or Change and your Phone? The answers to these questions should determine your priorities.
Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Try to make sure you have a place to store the items you need to have on hand. Many auto parts stores carry over the seat storage and you can also purchase various size containers to hold items. We purchased organizational items for our vehicles at our office supply store.
Step three: Prioritize
Now it is time to go through your three piles and prioritize the most important items in each group. Basically, split the piles into what you need to be kept close and what can be relegated to the back seat or cargo/trunk area. And just like seasonal clothes in a closet, many items such as ice scrapers and tire chains can be packed away in summer.
Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Do you listen to CDs? How many to your really listen to? Try only keeping 2-3 in your car and change out throughout the year. Also, many car owners store cleaning products in the trunk, but how often do you actually do an impromptu cleaning of your car? You may be better off keeping all car cleaning products in a bucket in your garage and just grab when needed.
Step four: Contain your needs
Loose objects throughout the car can not only make a mess but also become a safety hazard. Local stores offer a variety of cargo containers and organizers for every part of the car, from litter bags, CD storage, drink coolers and holders to trunk organizers, and folding hangers. For the family car, they sell individual “entertainment” centers for children, these hold books, toys, snacks, drinks and some even have a fold down table for drawing and coloring. For the “Business Office on the Go”, they sell centers that hold folders with a writing surface and detachable briefcases. Great organizers, whether it is for your kids, business or just the trunk/cargo area can make a world of difference.
Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Try an online container store, this could save you money. Be creative, you just may have something in your home that would work great. Example: do you have a travel make up bag with several different sections. This could work great to hold various items for your toddler or infant. Last years backpacks from school are great for storing video games and movies for the car.
Step five: Store
Store items you use regularly in places where you can reach them. Can't find a place to store that big box of facial tissue? Try a "tissue cup," a paper cup that fits into a cup holder and dispenses tissues one at a time. Of course, keep insurance information, maps, directions and other documents together in the glovebox. And be creative about storing lesser-used and seasonal items — there are often nooks and crannies around the spare tire or in the rear walls of the car.
Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Don't put anything on the floor — even trash — unless it's designed to sit there. Once you start messing up the floor, you'll find it too easy to keep adding to it, and soon your car will be cluttered again!
Once you clean and organize your car, you may find that you want to update or repair the cars interior and upholstery. Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers free estimates for your upholstery needs: Seat Covers, Seat Repairs, Carpets, Headliners, Sail Panels, Sun Visors, Door Panels and More! Choosing an Upholstery Fabric by Danny's Upholstery
Choosing an Upholstery Fabric by Danny’s Upholstery
If you are interested in re-upholstering some of your furniture there are several things you need to keep in mind. That's because if you just buy any type of fabric without considering things like thread count, style, durability, color, and the like then you may find yourself re-upholstering the furniture again in no time. This only adds to your expense and time involved so consider the following elements before you choose fabric to upholster your furniture.
Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach has a full selection of fabric samples to meet your upholstery needs. Stop by Your One Stop Upholstery Shop, we are open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, additional hours by appointment.
Duty and Abrasion
If you are looking for an upholstery fabric that is durable and will last for many years you will want to find a heavy or medium duty with a strong abrasion factor (12,000 cycles or more). Medium or heavy duty fabrics simply wear better and will look better in your home, too.
Style
The style of the fabric is really important and should be considered in relation to the piece of furniture it will be used on as well as the style and size of the room. Make sure the fabric will work well with other pieces of furniture and their respective upholstery, too. You can also visit http://www.greenhousefabrics.com to look at samples, keep in mind that the on line samples won’t show you the “it” factor of the fabrics and we recommend seeing a sample so you can also feel it; so feel free to give us a call and if we don’t have a sample in stock, we will order one for you.
Durability
The upholstery you choose should reflect how durable it needs to be. For example, if you are covering a chair in the dining room that is more for looks than sitting then it's okay to use a lower duty fabric that is not as durable. However, if you are choosing a fabric for a piece of furniture that has lots of traffic you will need to choose upholstery fabric that is tightly woven and really durable with a high abrasion factor.
Color
You may be dreaming of all white upholstery, however if this "dream" includes the nightmare of trying to keep white fabric clean then go for it. Otherwise, you will want to rethink your color choice. Choose a color that hides dirt and stains and that will blend in well with your other furniture and the room's color scheme.
Many designers recommend finding an “inspiration” piece to help coordinate your room. Remember to bring that piece with you when choosing your fabric.
Some other things you will want to keep in mind when shopping for upholstery is to ensure that the fabric is fade resistant. Lots of fabric can fade quite easily when in sunlight so to avoid this you need to find fabric that will resist sunlight, especially when you are covering your outdoor furniture and cushions.
Also, be sure to buy enough fabric. The last thing you want is to not have enough fabric to make stripes line up or to cover up the entire piece of furniture. Some pieces of furniture have skirts and need welt cord so keep this in mind. It's always nice to have extra fabric should you need to make a patch later on or to have Danny’s Upholstery make you some matching pillows to help tie your re-upholstered piece with other furniture in the room.
Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers free estimates. Call or stop by our shop. Our current hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Additional hours available by appointment. Evening and weekend estimates, pick ups and deliveries are also available for your convenience. We can be reached by calling 757-363-5889.

Auto Upholstery Repair a Topic from Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach
Auto Upholstery Repair a Topic from Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach
Auto upholstery repair is not always a complicated task; as a rule, when the repair is completed by a skilled upholsterer experienced in auto upholstery. Danny’s Upholstery is a full service upholstery shop in Virginia Beach. Danny White takes some time to discuss auto upholstery repairs below.
They say that you can’t judge a book by its cover! Yes, it is unfortunate that the first thing that attracts people is “covering”. However good the thing inside the cover is, people will not check it out until and unless the cover is impressive. I guess the same rule applies to cars as well. The engine can be fantastic and is giving you a smooth ride, but if the design of the car, including the upholstery, interiors and exteriors seem as if the car is just out of the junk yard, nobody will want to drive it. It may not be safe either in some situations to drive such a battered car. This is especially so when you are selling the car off or getting an evaluation done on your car. In such a situation, if there are some repairing tasks regarding the upholstery, it warrants an auto upholstery repair.
Auto Leather Upholstery Repair
What kind of tools you use and how tedious it is going to be depends on the spot and extent of damage. A small tear on the car seat cover or the back of the seat will not be much of a problem.
Repairing a Tear
For a simple tear, you can replace a specific section or area with a matching material in vinyl, leather or fabric.
An 'Edgy' Rip
In case the auto upholstery has been damaged on the seam close to the edge, the seam can be sewn and/or welt cord can be replaced.
Burns and All
The auto upholstery repair would be the same as above, the section or area can be replaced with a material to match as close to the existing as possible.
Some Tips for Auto Upholstery Repair
Whether you get the auto upholstery repair done from Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach or try to do the seat repair on your own there are some things which need to be kept in mind.
Tip 1
Never ignore the surface material. It is good to have an array of choices within the surface material for matching with what you already have in your car. In the event of a complete replacement, choose something classy as well as comfortable. Danny’s Upholstery has a full selection of fabrics and can also customize your seat covers to meet your specifications.
Tip 2
As car upholstery repair is encumbered with precision and technicalities, if you are not sure about something, then the best bet would be to it give to a skilled tradesmen with experience in auto upholstery. This will ensure the seat repair has been done correctly and the look of the car has been retained.
Tip 3
When you go in for leather upholstery repair in your car, keep in mind some factors - for instance, all estimators in upholstery aren’t necessarily an upholsterer by trade and may not have experience in doing the actual job. If you are looking for a custom job or specialized work, your best bet is to get an estimate from a master craftsman in upholstery that will actually be responsible for completing the work. I offer free estimates, give me a call at 757-363-5889.
Last, but not the least, make sure that the company you approach is well known and credible. Ask the estimator if he/she has upholstery experience! Ask for before and after pictures for reference! Stop by their upholstery shop and check out work in progress. Are they professional and courteous? Do they submit their estimates in writing? Do you only speak to a salesperson? Is the master craftsman available to meet your specific needs and answer your questions?

Maintaining Boat Upholstery by Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach
Boat Seat Covers, Cushions and Upholstery
Learn why boat seats, boat cushions and upholstery are important in the upkeep of a boat.
The boat's upholstery not only adds charm and style to the boat, but also protects its interior. Upholstery should be durable and easy to clean. The boat's upholstery can be treated to resist mildew and improve its appearance.
Where Can You Get Upholstery Done for Your Boat
Boat owners may need to replace their boat upholstery as time and the elements take their toll. Fortunately, Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach has over 33 years experience reupholstering boat seats and boat cushions. For a free estimate, call us at 757-363-5889.
Choosing Boat Upholstery
The most important thing to look for when shopping for boat upholstery is durability. Any boater will tell you that boat upholstery suffers more wear and tear than upholstery in a house. Since the interior of the boat will be subject to sun, rain and regular use, choosing upholstery made from a durable fabric is important. Upholstery is typically made from marine vinyl. Marine fabric is durable, easy to clean and can be treated to resist mildew. If in doubt as to what fabric is best in your locale, talk to local boaters to see what kind of upholstery they have in their boats or just Ask Danny. Danny White is a master upholstery craftsman serving the Hampton Roads area. Just give him a call at 757-363-5889 or send him an email.
Cleaning and Maintaining Boat Upholstery
To ensure the longevity and quality of boat upholstery, it is important to properly treat, clean and protect it. Boat upholstery should be regularly cleaned with a safe fabric cleaner or soapy water to get rid of dust or dirt buildup. It is important to be certain of the fabric the boat upholstery is made of so the proper cleaner can be used. Some cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage fabric over time. When in doubt, use warm, soapy water to clean the boat upholstery as this is safe for almost any fabric. It is imperative to clean the boat upholstery on a regular basis.
Treating the boat upholstery with a water-repellant agent is also a good idea. Due to constant moisture exposure, mildew is a big threat to boat upholstery. Boat upholstery can be treated for mildew resistance or sprayed with Lysol after the fabric has been cleaned and is dry. There are kits available to remove mildew if it is already present. Lubricate zippers and fasteners with a clear silicone spray to keep corrosion to a minimum.
As you know, boat seats can wear out when they are constantly exposed to the sun and other outside elements. If the elements don't get to them, age will eventually damage the most well-cared-for boat seats. Replacing them with new ones can be pricey. It's cheaper to have them reupholstered.
