Top 11 Ways to Get Your Car Ready for Spring by Danny's Upholstery

Top 11 Ways to Get Your Car Ready for Spring by Danny’s Upholstery

Winter sweaters and boots have been packed away just in time for shorts and flip-flops. Does your vehicle benefit from the same “Spring Cleaning” as your home? Warm weather means long weekend getaways and even longer vacation road trips, so take a moment to read the following tips from Danny White, master upholsterer and owner of Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach.

In some cases, you'll be able to perform these actions yourself. Others are best done by a mechanic as part of a tune-up. Some will help your vehicle look better. Most will help it perform more efficiently and get better gas mileage. If you need interior seat repairs, want custom seat covers, are thinking of replacing the carpet or your headliner is falling down, call Danny’s Upholstery at 757-363-5889. Danny’s is Your One Stop Upholstery Shop serving the Hampton Roads area for over 33 years.

1. Visually inspect interior and exterior for repairs and custom changes.
This time of year is a great time to repair seat upholstery or replace carpet if needed. Have you always wanted to customize or “trick out” the interior with custom or new upholstered seat covers? Is your headliner falling down or torn? Do you need a seat or frame repair? Danny’s Upholstery is here to meet your needs and make your dreams come true. Give Danny a call at 757-363-5889 or since it is easier for him to provide an accurate estimate by seeing your auto, stop by our stop. We are open M-S, see hours below.

2. Get rid of road salt on the undercarriage.
Road salt can damage your vehicle by eating away at its undercarriage. Use a garden hose with as much water pressure as your system can muster to loosen winter grime and salt. Or, if you have a movable lawn sprinkler that's low enough, set that under the vehicle to wash away what you can't reach. Did you know that Danny’s Upholstery is located next to Green Clean Auto Car Wash at the corner of Independence Blvd and Pleasure House Rd.? Stop by our shop at 4904 Rutherford Rd, Virginia Beach for a free estimate.

3. Check the tires.
Tire pressure changes about 1 pound per square inch for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit change in outside temperature, so it's important to check tire pressure after weather changes. Check your owner's manual for the recommended pressure for your tire, and never exceed that. Always check pressure when the tires are cold, since driving even a couple of miles to the gas station can provide a false reading. Higher pressure generally results in improved steering response and fuel economy, but a stiffer ride, and it wears out the tread in the center. Under inflation generally provides a smoother ride, but it causes tires to wear out at the sides. It also wastes gas because tires need more power to push the vehicle.

4. Check wiper blades.
Your wipers work hard all winter removing dirt and debris, including salt spray. Since the life expectancy of a wiper blade is six months to a year, check that the blades are making full contact with the windshield and have not dried out. Don't wait for a heavy spring or summer rainstorm to discover your blades aren't performing properly. Also, refill the wiper fluid tank.

5. Rotate the tires.
This is a relatively simple car care procedure that will extend the tread life of your tires, and should be done roughly every 5,000-10,000 miles. Check your owner's manual for exact intervals. A good rule is to rotate tires after every oil change. Many oil change establishments offer tire rotation or check to see if your tire dealer offers free rotation throughout the life of your tires. Mileage restrictions can apply.

6. Change the oil and oil filter.
Some car manufacturers recommend changing to a heavyweight oil to help the engine perform more efficiently during hotter weather. Most cars now have recommended oil grades of 5W-30, 10W-30 or 10W-40 — your owner's manual will tell you which. Change the oil filter each time you change the oil, since it's obvious that a dirty filter won't keep the new oil clean.

7. Change the air filter.
The air filter prevents dust and other impurities from getting into the combustion chambers of the cylinders, resulting in wasted gas and weaker engine performance. According to the Car Care Council, replacing a clogged filter can improve mileage by as much as 10 percent. The time-honored way to check for dirt is to hold the filter up to the light, but since many new filters show light when dirty, or show no light when clean, it is more reliable to change the air filter every six months, and more often in dusty locations.

8. Flush and fill your cooling system.
This is cheap insurance against engine failure. The Car Care Council recommends flushing every two years, or 24,000 miles for most vehicles. Simply draining your radiator is not enough; you need to flush the system with a radiator flush product, not just plain water, to remove stubborn rust, grease and sediment. Then, refill with a 50/50 mixture of coolant and water. (If you live in a more severe climate, increase the percentage of coolant to about 70.)

9. Check the radiator and gas caps.
A snug radiator cap helps raise the cooling system pressure, giving added protection against boiling over. Radiator caps don't last forever, so replace yours whenever you flush the cooling system. Pressure recommendations vary, so get the right cap for your vehicle model. With gas at record prices, be sure there's a tight seal on the gas cap, too, to prevent that high-priced octane from vaporizing. Nearly 20 percent of vehicles have gas caps that are damaged, loose or missing altogether, wasting some 147 million gallons of gas every year.

10. Check the battery and spark plugs.
Make sure battery posts and connections are secure and free of corrosion. Spark plugs fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles. That's a lot of heat and wear and tear in the form of electrical and chemical erosion. Dirty spark plugs cause misfiring, which wastes fuel. If you're planning a long trip, consider replacing the battery and spark plugs if they are more than two years old.

11. Clean the compartments and car interior.
Appearances are important, no matter what the season. Discard the debris that's been hibernating under the seats all winter, then attack the interior with the most powerful vacuum cleaner you can find. Remove the floor mats to vacuum or wash outside the car. Open the trunk, remove the spare tire and jack and vacuum here, too. Before returning the spare, check its pressure. Most likely it will need air, so remember to do that the next you time you fill the tank. Road dust, coffee stains and fingerprints have no appeal any time of the year, so after vacuuming, use a spray vinyl cleaner and a soft cloth on the dashboard, steering wheel, door panels and seats. That also helps protect against cracking, sun damage and fading. A good household upholstery cleaner is fine for fabric seats; for leather seats, follow manufacturer's recommendations. Next is an aerosol silicone spray to treat the weather stripping around the outside of doors, windows and the trunk. Be sure to wipe away the excess.

Whew — all done! Finally, you're ready to wash and wax. Ordinary dishwashing liquid in a bucket of water and a clean, soft sponge will do nicely for the washing, using a different sponge for the body and the tire rims. Then buff dry to a sparkle worthy of spring sunshine, apply a protective coat of wax if necessary and treat yourself to a leisurely ride. You've earned it!

Customize Your Car Interior By Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Customize Your Car Interior by Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach

So you have a car you want to make all your own and you want to personalize the auto upholstery. Your car could be a vintage hand-me-down from your grandparents, your modest semi-used starter car with great sentimental value, or even that hot new import you had shipped in. You love it, but you just don't want it to look like it's just rolled off the assembly line, you want a subtle custom interior per your specifications and taste.

Where to start? Research first, try searching online, search for a master craftsman with a local upholstery shop that you can trust. Most upholstery shops have online sites where you can look at previous upholstery projects. Many offer free estimates, but remember the upholsterer needs to see the car in order to give the most accurate pricing and ensure you are getting the fabric and customization you desire.

Since you are thinking of a customized car interior, Danny’s Upholstery can help you select unique car seat cover designs, cool car interior colors, stitching and more.

Here are a few custom car interior tips from Danny White, owner of Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach.

Few things look stranger than a custom job with mismatched interiors and exteriors. Make a list of areas you have considered redoing. Keep in mind, many upholstery shops will work within your allotted budget. Most custom interiors can be done in stages. A lustrous, ultramodern body does not go well with fuzzy dice and leopard-print seat covers; it is good to remember you spend most of your time enjoying the car from the inside. So when planning how your car will look, take a look at it from the outside to make sure that when you customize your cars interior everything is in harmony.

Now that you have an idea of how you want your car to look, it is time to start with the exciting choices. Exert your creativity by choosing the fabric (cloth or vinyl are popular choices and come in a variety of colors) you will be using for your cars interior. Pick a main color or theme for your interior and consider it for your carpet, door panels, headliner and/or seat covers. Danny’s Upholstery has a wide assortment of choices for custom interiors colors, fabrics and designs. Now is the time to decide whether you want to go custom or restore to original. Danny’s Upholstery is located at 4904 Rutherford Rd, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. We are open Monday thru Friday 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday’s from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Is Your Car a Mess? Organize in 5 Easy Steps by Danny's Upholstery

Is Your Car a Mess? Danny’s Upholstery offers tips to Organize Your Car in Five Steps

Do you avoid driving with friends in your car? Do you first have to clean off the seat or the floor — or both? Maybe it’s time to clean out and clean up!

Many people spend more time in their cars than in most rooms of their homes, yet they neglect their auto interior when it comes to regular "housekeeping." When it gets really messy, organizing your car can seem as overwhelming as keeping a closet in order. In the past, I know I have “cleaned” out my car, just to throw all the junk in my trunk and glovebox! So Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach took some time to search out ways to Clean Up and Keep the “Junk out of your Trunk”!

Step one: Sort and clean up (make sure you have a garbage bag)
Take everything out of the car, glovebox, door pockets, consoles and car seats. You will be surprised what you will find once you get those car seats out. Don't forget to remove all items the trunk and cargo area!

Chances are you'll find all kinds of trash to throw out. Organize the rest of the items into three piles: items you use all the time, things you use occasionally and emergency/car maintenance items. Whatever doesn't fall into these categories should be stored in your home or garage.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Many of us find ourselves driving up to our mailboxes or going straight to our cars after checking the mailbox. Break this habit and this will save you the hassle of missing bills and piles of junk mail in your car.

Step two: Analyze

Ask yourself, "How do I use my car?" Do you need to keep work items or samples on hand in your truck or cargo area? Do you need room for groceries? Do you transport clients? Are you a soccer mom or have small children in car seats? Do you work from your vehicle?

What are you always struggling to find? Tools or Files, a Pen and Note pad, Snacks or Tissues or Change and your Phone? The answers to these questions should determine your priorities.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Try to make sure you have a place to store the items you need to have on hand. Many auto parts stores carry over the seat storage and you can also purchase various size containers to hold items. We purchased organizational items for our vehicles at our office supply store.

Step three: Prioritize

Now it is time to go through your three piles and prioritize the most important items in each group. Basically, split the piles into what you need to be kept close and what can be relegated to the back seat or cargo/trunk area. And just like seasonal clothes in a closet, many items such as ice scrapers and tire chains can be packed away in summer.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Do you listen to CDs? How many to your really listen to? Try only keeping 2-3 in your car and change out throughout the year. Also, many car owners store cleaning products in the trunk, but how often do you actually do an impromptu cleaning of your car? You may be better off keeping all car cleaning products in a bucket in your garage and just grab when needed.

Step four: Contain your needs
Loose objects throughout the car can not only make a mess but also become a safety hazard. Local stores offer a variety of cargo containers and organizers for every part of the car, from litter bags, CD storage, drink coolers and holders to trunk organizers, and folding hangers. For the family car, they sell individual “entertainment” centers for children, these hold books, toys, snacks, drinks and some even have a fold down table for drawing and coloring. For the “Business Office on the Go”, they sell centers that hold folders with a writing surface and detachable briefcases. Great organizers, whether it is for your kids, business or just the trunk/cargo area can make a world of difference.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip:
Try an online container store, this could save you money. Be creative, you just may have something in your home that would work great. Example: do you have a travel make up bag with several different sections. This could work great to hold various items for your toddler or infant. Last years backpacks from school are great for storing video games and movies for the car.

Step five: Store
Store items you use regularly in places where you can reach them. Can't find a place to store that big box of facial tissue? Try a "tissue cup," a paper cup that fits into a cup holder and dispenses tissues one at a time. Of course, keep insurance information, maps, directions and other documents together in the glovebox. And be creative about storing lesser-used and seasonal items — there are often nooks and crannies around the spare tire or in the rear walls of the car.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Don't put anything on the floor — even trash — unless it's designed to sit there. Once you start messing up the floor, you'll find it too easy to keep adding to it, and soon your car will be cluttered again!

Once you clean and organize your car, you may find that you want to update or repair the cars interior and upholstery. Choosing an Upholstery Fabric by Danny's Upholstery

Choosing an Upholstery Fabric by Danny’s Upholstery

If you are interested in re-upholstering some of your furniture there are several things you need to keep in mind. That's because if you just buy any type of fabric without considering things like thread count, style, durability, color, and the like then you may find yourself re-upholstering the furniture again in no time. This only adds to your expense and time involved so consider the following elements before you choose fabric to upholster your furniture.

Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach has a full selection of fabric samples to meet your upholstery needs. Stop by Your One Stop Upholstery Shop, we are open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday, 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM, additional hours by appointment.

Duty and Abrasion

If you are looking for an upholstery fabric that is durable and will last for many years you will want to find a heavy or medium duty with a strong abrasion factor (12,000 cycles or more). Medium or heavy duty fabrics simply wear better and will look better in your home, too.

Style

The style of the fabric is really important and should be considered in relation to the piece of furniture it will be used on as well as the style and size of the room. Make sure the fabric will work well with other pieces of furniture and their respective upholstery, too. You can also visit http://www.greenhousefabrics.com to look at samples, keep in mind that the on line samples won’t show you the “it” factor of the fabrics and we recommend seeing a sample so you can also feel it; so feel free to give us a call and if we don’t have a sample in stock, we will order one for you.

Durability

The upholstery you choose should reflect how durable it needs to be. For example, if you are covering a chair in the dining room that is more for looks than sitting then it's okay to use a lower duty fabric that is not as durable. However, if you are choosing a fabric for a piece of furniture that has lots of traffic you will need to choose upholstery fabric that is tightly woven and really durable with a high abrasion factor.

Color

You may be dreaming of all white upholstery, however if this "dream" includes the nightmare of trying to keep white fabric clean then go for it. Otherwise, you will want to rethink your color choice. Choose a color that hides dirt and stains and that will blend in well with your other furniture and the room's color scheme.
Many designers recommend finding an “inspiration” piece to help coordinate your room. Remember to bring that piece with you when choosing your fabric.

Some other things you will want to keep in mind when shopping for upholstery is to ensure that the fabric is fade resistant. Lots of fabric can fade quite easily when in sunlight so to avoid this you need to find fabric that will resist sunlight, especially when you are covering your outdoor furniture and cushions.

Also, be sure to buy enough fabric. The last thing you want is to not have enough fabric to make stripes line up or to cover up the entire piece of furniture. Some pieces of furniture have skirts and need welt cord so keep this in mind. It's always nice to have extra fabric should you need to make a patch later on or to have Danny’s Upholstery make you some matching pillows to help tie your re-upholstered piece with other furniture in the room.

Auto Upholstery Repair a Topic from Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Auto Upholstery Repair a Topic from Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Auto upholstery repair is not always a complicated task; as a rule, when the repair is completed by a skilled upholsterer experienced in auto upholstery. Danny’s Upholstery is a full service upholstery shop in Virginia Beach. Danny White takes some time to discuss auto upholstery repairs below.

They say that you can’t judge a book by its cover! Yes, it is unfortunate that the first thing that attracts people is “covering”. However good the thing inside the cover is, people will not check it out until and unless the cover is impressive. I guess the same rule applies to cars as well. The engine can be fantastic and is giving you a smooth ride, but if the design of the car, including the upholstery, interiors and exteriors seem as if the car is just out of the junk yard, nobody will want to drive it. It may not be safe either in some situations to drive such a battered car. This is especially so when you are selling the car off or getting an evaluation done on your car. In such a situation, if there are some repairing tasks regarding the upholstery, it warrants an auto upholstery repair.

Auto Leather Upholstery Repair

What kind of tools you use and how tedious it is going to be depends on the spot and extent of damage. A small tear on the car seat cover or the back of the seat will not be much of a problem.

Repairing a Tear
For a simple tear, you can replace a specific section or area with a matching material in vinyl, leather or fabric.

An 'Edgy' Rip
In case the auto upholstery has been damaged on the seam close to the edge, the seam can be sewn and/or welt cord can be replaced.

Burns and All
The auto upholstery repair would be the same as above, the section or area can be replaced with a material to match as close to the existing as possible.

Some Tips for Auto Upholstery Repair

Whether you get the auto upholstery repair done from Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach or try to do the seat repair on your own there are some things which need to be kept in mind.

Tip 1
Never ignore the surface material. It is good to have an array of choices within the surface material for matching with what you already have in your car. In the event of a complete replacement, choose something classy as well as comfortable. Danny’s Upholstery has a full selection of fabrics and can also customize your seat covers to meet your specifications.

Tip 2
As car upholstery repair is encumbered with precision and technicalities, if you are not sure about something, then the best bet would be to it give to a skilled tradesmen with experience in auto upholstery. This will ensure the seat repair has been done correctly and the look of the car has been retained.

Tip 3
When you go in for leather upholstery repair in your car, keep in mind some factors - for instance, all estimators in upholstery aren’t necessarily an upholsterer by trade and may not have experience in doing the actual job. If you are looking for a custom job or specialized work, your best bet is to get an estimate from a master craftsman in upholstery that will actually be responsible for completing the work. I offer free estimates, give me a call at 757-363-5889.

Last, but not the least, make sure that the company you approach is well known and credible. Ask the estimator if he/she has upholstery experience! Ask for before and after pictures for reference! Stop by their upholstery shop and check out work in progress. Are they professional and courteous? Do they submit their estimates in writing? Do you only speak to a salesperson? Is the master craftsman available to meet your specific needs and answer your questions?

Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers free estimates. Call or stop by our shop. Our current hours are Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Saturday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Additional hours available by appointment. Evening and weekend estimates, pick ups and deliveries are also available for your convenience. We can be reached by calling 757-363-5889.

Maintaining Boat Upholstery by Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Boat Seat Covers, Cushions and Upholstery

Learn why boat seats, boat cushions and upholstery are important in the upkeep of a boat.

The boat's upholstery not only adds charm and style to the boat, but also protects its interior. Upholstery should be durable and easy to clean. The boat's upholstery can be treated to resist mildew and improve its appearance.

Where Can You Get Upholstery Done for Your Boat

Boat owners may need to replace their boat upholstery as time and the elements take their toll. Fortunately, Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach has over 33 years experience reupholstering boat seats and boat cushions. For a free estimate, call us at 757-363-5889.

Choosing Boat Upholstery

The most important thing to look for when shopping for boat upholstery is durability. Any boater will tell you that boat upholstery suffers more wear and tear than upholstery in a house. Since the interior of the boat will be subject to sun, rain and regular use, choosing upholstery made from a durable fabric is important. Upholstery is typically made from marine vinyl. Marine fabric is durable, easy to clean and can be treated to resist mildew. If in doubt as to what fabric is best in your locale, talk to local boaters to see what kind of upholstery they have in their boats or just Ask Danny. Danny White is a master upholstery craftsman serving the Hampton Roads area. Just give him a call at 757-363-5889 or send him an email.

Cleaning and Maintaining Boat Upholstery

To ensure the longevity and quality of boat upholstery, it is important to properly treat, clean and protect it. Boat upholstery should be regularly cleaned with a safe fabric cleaner or soapy water to get rid of dust or dirt buildup. It is important to be certain of the fabric the boat upholstery is made of so the proper cleaner can be used. Some cleaners contain harsh chemicals that can damage fabric over time. When in doubt, use warm, soapy water to clean the boat upholstery as this is safe for almost any fabric. It is imperative to clean the boat upholstery on a regular basis.

Treating the boat upholstery with a water-repellant agent is also a good idea. Due to constant moisture exposure, mildew is a big threat to boat upholstery. Boat upholstery can be treated for mildew resistance or sprayed with Lysol after the fabric has been cleaned and is dry. There are kits available to remove mildew if it is already present. Lubricate zippers and fasteners with a clear silicone spray to keep corrosion to a minimum.

As you know, boat seats can wear out when they are constantly exposed to the sun and other outside elements. If the elements don't get to them, age will eventually damage the most well-cared-for boat seats. Replacing them with new ones can be pricey. It's cheaper to have them reupholstered.

Cold Weather Car Care Tips from Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Cold Weather Car Tips from Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach

Cold winter temperatures can cause problems not only for one's health, but the health of one's car. Auto experts are advising drivers to properly winterize their cars so they can withstand the winter weather in the Hampton Roads area.

Auto Upholsterer, Danny White, owner of Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach would like to offer a few car care tips to help the Hampton Roads community throughout this winter. "Antifreeze is number one because it's the life blood of the system," Danny said. Maintaining proper levels keeps the car's motor running and prevents it from freezing. However, the type of antifreeze one uses on a car is determined by the car's make and model.

By and large, auto experts say green antifreeze is intended for use on cars manufactured prior to 1996. Red antifreeze is tended for use on cars manufactured after 1996. Certain brands require diluting the antifreeze with water before adding it to the car.

Auto experts say you can avoid this by using gold antifreeze, which is compatible will all makes and all models.

"This time of year is not a good time to be walking on the side of the road, or have your [car] hood up," Danny White warns. He says he takes the time to winterize his personal and company vehicles each year. "I can't forget that, because I can't forget the cold!"

Workers at Auto Zone in Virginia Beach say antifreeze sales have soared since cold weather set in at the start of the week. Danny White stated, "You can spend $10 or $15 dollars for antifreeze or you can spend a $100 to $1000 later for engine repair. In my opinion it is best to be prepared for any weather."

Auto body workers say the average cost for cold-weather-related repairs starts at around $2000. Here are other ways you can reduce your chances of minimizing cold-weather damage to your car:

Battery: inspect the battery terminals for corrosion. Heavy corrosion will stop the electric current from starting the vehicle. Use a terminal brush to remove corrosion. Auto experts suggest using this with battery terminal cleaner spray, rather than homemade remedies, such as Coca-Cola or vinegar.

Belts: Check the engine belts for cracks. Cracks can eventually cause the belt to break, which will stop the cars engine from running.

Hoses: Ensure engines hoses are not rigid. They are more likely to burst and leak water when rigid. This can burn out the car's engine if not replaced soon after.

Tires: inspect the depth of the tire tread. Worn tire tread reduces the tires traction, which is especially dangerous on icy roads.

Fuel tank: Do not let your cars fuel tank level fall below a quarter tank. Also, inspect for moisture in the fluid. This can cause the fuel line to freeze.

Engine warm up: Mechanics say a good rule of thumb is to start the engine and wait until the frost melts from the windshield before driving at normal speeds. Most cars manufactured after 2000 only require one to two minutes to sufficiently warm the engine.

Auto body experts advise waiting for the engine to cool before adding liquids and checking the battery. They also suggest wearing gloves to protect from battery acid and other chemicals that may irritate your skin.

"Just make those small provisions and take care of that, and your vehicle will take care of you," Danny White said.

For more information on how to care for the inside of your car, contact Danny White at Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach. They offer free estimates and have a pick up/delivery service. They can be reached by calling 757-363-5889.

Danny's Upholstery Offers Tips for How to Avoid Holiday Stress

Tips for How to Avoid Holiday Stress and Burnout

Five Simple and Quick Steps to Organize and Enjoy the Season
.
The Holiday Season can bring a tremendous amount of joy. But all of the preparations and activities also have the potential to bring anxiety and tension.

Throughout the month of December, the hints of the holidays are everywhere. Magazines, displays, catalogs, decorations, advertisements, and books all offer endless tips for the most perfect, peaceful, joyous holiday ever. The pressure to create the ideal holiday can be incredible, often leading to anxiety, stress and eventual burnout. But taking a few bold steps can make a significant difference in truly enjoying a meaningful season.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip #1: Decide What is Truly Important

No one can do everything during the holidays. There will always be one more cookie recipe to try, one more room to decorate, one more gift to buy, and one more event to attend. To avoid burnout, make a list of what is truly important and stick to it. List everything that normally happens during the season as well as the important things that never seem to happen because they get crowded out. Then cross off every activity, event or commitment that is truly not important. Be ruthless about what is valuable and get some input from your immediate family members.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip #2: Know Your Optimal Mode of Operation

One key to avoiding burnout is deciding if you are an early or late holiday person. In other words, is it less stressful to get everything done early or does starting too early cause you to continue at a frenzied pitch until midnight the night before because you can’t stop? Determine if you should shop early or wait, if you should bake ahead or wait until the week of, etc. Know what works best for you.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip #3: Write Everything Down in One Place

Trying to mentally juggle dozens of details is a sure-fire recipe for major stress. Write everything holiday-related in a notebook. Make lists for cards, foods, menus, gifts, parties, etc. If you have a brilliant idea, write it down immediately. If you find a recipe you want to try, make a photocopy and tape it in the notebook. Keep everything written down in one place.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip #4: Avoid People Who Ruin the Holiday
One of the biggest sources of stress during the holidays can be other people. If there are people who consistently ruin the holidays, don’t spend time with them. Yes, it may create friction with other people who will not agree with that choice. But if spending time with certain family members, friends, neighbors or coworkers literally ruins the holiday, find a way to get out of it if at all possible.

Danny’s Upholstery Tip #5: Less is More
Accept your limitations. Make peace with the fact that you cannot do everything and be everything to everyone. Do less and enjoy it more. Rather than attending two parties a week for five weeks, attend one party a week. Or attend a party every other week. Focus on truly enjoying the moment when you are there rather than worrying about the next thing you have to do as soon as you can reasonably get away.

The holiday season can be one of tremendous meaning and celebration. By focusing on those aspects that truly bring joy and peace, it is possible to avoid the stress and burnout so often associated with the season.

Greens for the Season For free and easy decorations, snip greenery from your yard. Spruce, holly, fir, juniper, and arborvitae can stay green for weeks in a house that is not too warm or dry. Also, it is best to use free greenery 1-2 weeks prior to the holiday, a helpful hint is to soak the greenery in a tub overnight to give it time to soak up the water to help keep it fresh longer.

How We Can Fix your Auto Upholstery

Nothing can give you the old car blues more that torn auto upholstery. It happens to just about every car at one time or another and now that we are keeping our cars longer it is happening to even more of us.

This does not mean we have to accept this wear and tear. There are a couple of different ways we can restore our auto upholstery erasing those visible years of use.

Auto upholstery takes a significant amount of daily abuse and under high tension given the way it's made firm to support you while driving or riding. Of course, you could use automobile seat covers but before spending that money give these lower cost options a try. Once fixed, you could fall in love with your car all over again.

First thing to do is to have an upholstery professional analyze the seat or interior for any possibility to be repaired. Have them price a seat repair and a complete seat cover. Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers free estimates! Walk-ins are always welcome or call 757-363-5889.

There are many reasons seat covers and fabrics wear out. Did the fabric rip due to stress on a seam? Did something cut into the fabric? Has the leather cracked and/or faded over time? Did it tear because you need a more durable fabric?
Seat covers can also be worn away from infant car seats rubbing on the auto upholstery. This can be an easy fix, since many times only a section of the seat cover needs to be replaced.

If the rip to your auto upholstery is on the seam near the edge it is sometimes possible to sew back together.

Danny’s Upholstery suggests having an auto upholsterer replace the actual insert or section to complete the repair if you aren’t looking for a new look and if matching upholstery fabric is available. Many times, factory original fabric can be ordered to match the existing material as close as possible.

Danny’s Upholstery is Your One Stop Upholstery Shop and they are there to help. In most cases, they will need to see the vehicle to give the most accurate estimate; however, they understand that sometimes their customers need a general idea of the cost prior to making an actual decision. As always, a free estimate is just a phone call away, 757-363-5889.

What you should know about truck seat covers by Danny's Upholstery

What you should know about truck seat covers by Danny’s Upholstery!

If you want to replace your truck’s car seat covers, you may need more than just ordinary store bought ones. What you may need is a seat cover that is equally strong and reliable like its user – you may need factory fitted, custom truck seat cover to ensure continued durability that you have come to expect from your truck.
Do you use your truck, sliding in and out multiple times throughout the day? Do you have torn, ripped or worn out areas on your seat upholstery? Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach provides custom seat covers (or repair) for your truck or automobile. They can customize to your specifications or match to the original. For a free estimate call Danny at 757-363-5889 or send him an email at dannysupholstery@gmail.com.

Remember custom seat covers are NOT the same thing as purchasing slip covers. Custom seat covers are factory fitted custom covers and are held down with hog rings; just like factory original covers that come when the truck is new. When having custom seat covers installed into your truck, Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach is going to have the opportunity to re-pad and repair any areas that have worn over time. Store bought slip covers merely go over what is already there and are usually held down with Velcro. What we are talking about is having the old upholstery removed and changed/updated with new. Totally different thing!

Why use a store-bought interior seat cover for your truck, when these can only be made of canvas, cotton or a polyester blend? Do these fabric seat covers have the ability to withstand the rough wear and tear capability you need your truck to provide? Danny doesn’t think so and he has been in the upholstery business for over 33 years!

Danny’s Upholstery has a full showroom of vinyl and leather fabric samples. They can customize or match to the original manufacture specifications. Stop by to see how they are Your One Stop Upholstery Shop. Danny’s Upholstery is open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 to 5:00 PM and Saturday, 8:00 to 1:00 PM. Additional hours available by appointment.

Not sure if you want or need an entire seat cover? Danny’s Upholstery can also do seat repairs for all vehicles. They can also do frame repairs, install carpet kits, and headliner replacements; not to mention upholstery for your home and office furniture, boats, RVs, motorcycle, marine and more!

Remember custom seat covers are NOT the same thing as purchasing slip covers. Custom seat covers are factory fitted custom covers and are held down with hog rings; just like factory original covers that come when the car is new.

Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers a How to Guide to Reupholstering Your Furniture

If your furniture is looking like it has seen better days, you may be thinking about giving it the boot in favor of some newer pieces. But before you kick that old chair or couch to the curb, consider renewing that old furniture with some brand new upholstery. Like sanding and refinishing, reupholstering an old chair, couch, or cushion can really give new life to some of your older pieces. And, it can give you a chance to express some of your own creativity, in a hands-on fashion! Here are some of the essential tips that you will need to reupholster your own pieces of furniture or at least get a feel for the steps an upholstery shop takes to reupholster your furniture pieces.

As always, Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach is Your One Stop Upholstery Shop, for a free estimate call us at 757-363-5889 or email dannysupholstery@gmail.com.

Why Reupholster?
Reupholstering can be a great alternative to buying new furniture for your dining room, living room, or bedroom. You can reupholster almost any type of furniture that has been covered in fabric, and, if you are up to the challenge, you can save some money by doing it yourself. Many people decide to have furniture reupholstered because it:

• saves time spent on ordering custom furniture
• allows you to choose the exact type of fabric you want in your piece
• allows you to salvage antique furniture or furniture that has sentimental value

Choosing a Fabric

Before you can reupholster, you will first need to decide on the type of fabric you want your chair, cushion, or sofa to have. It is important that you choose upholstery-quality fabric, and not regular fabric. Upholstery fabric is much more durable and will stand up to the test of time, unlike regular fabric. Most upholstery fabrics are stain-resistant too, which means that you don’t have to worry too much if you spill that cup of coffee! When you aren’t sure, try looking for a thicker fabric or look for a nice chenille.

Danny’s Upholstery is a full service upholstery shop and has a full showroom of fabric samples. Customers are always welcome; so feel free to stop by and see for why they are Your One Stop Upholstery Shop. Danny’s is open Monday thru Friday 8:00 to 5:00 PM and Saturday, 8:00 to 1:00 PM, additional hours available by appointment.

Be sure to choose a fabric that you like and that will match the other furniture in the room. However, the thicker and stiffer the fabric is that you select, the more difficult the re-upholstery process will be. It is typically not recommended that amateur upholsters try to reupholster leather or suede furniture. Danny’s Upholstery is open to the public, and they can provide you with a great selection of fabrics.

Necessary Tools
In order to begin your re-upholstery project, you will need to collect a few re-upholstery supplies. It is important that you have:

• a pair of needle nose pliers
• a staple gun (with staples) or upholstery tacks
• a rubber mallet
• a pair of sharp scissors
• welting (cloth used to trim along the edges of furniture)
• glue gun
• cotton batting (to make the furniture soft to sit on)
• sewing machine for cushions (You don’t have a sewing machine? Danny’s Upholstery can make cushion covers for you!)

Danny’s Upholstery Tip: They also recommend a pair of side cutters and staple remover to ease the tear down.

Depending upon the piece of furniture that you are reupholstering, you may also want to find a friend to help you out. It can sometimes be tricky to tackle reupholstering on your own. For a free estimate for your projects, call Danny’s Upholstery at 757-363-5889. Check out their facebook for pictures and videos of completed projects, www.facebook.com/dannysupholstery.

Reupholstering a Chair Cushion

Reupholstering a chair cushion is a relatively easy job and is perfect for beginners. Practice on your cushions before you head straight to that loveseat or sofa bed!

• Unscrew the seat cushion from the chair frame. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: remember to keep all the screws
• Remove all of the staples or tacks in the fabric using the needle nose pliers. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: be careful to remove them all to avoid injuries later.
• Remove the fabric. If it looks worn out, remove the old batting from the cushion too. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: We sell batting by the yard.
• Most chair cushions are made out of a single piece of wood. Take this piece of wood and lay it on top of your new fabric. Cut around the piece of wood with your scissors, leaving at least two or three inches extra overhang on each side. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: If your chair or sofa has removable cushions that need to be sewn, Danny can make a new cushion covers for you with a zipper to close for your convenience. For a free estimate stop by their shop or call 757-363-5889.
• Replace the stuffing with new batting. Lay the seat board on top of the batting, and pull the sides of the batting tight over what will be the bottom of the seat. Staple the batting down with your staple gun. Trim off excess batting. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: We can custom cut foam, sell batting by the yard at $4.95 per yard and do frame repairs.
• Lay the piece of wood, batting-side down, over your fabric. Pull the sides of the fabric and stretch it over what will be the bottom of the seat. Staple the fabric down on all four sides. Be careful to make the corner edges neat. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: this would be a good time to have a friend help, pull the fabric tight to avoid creases and puckering.
• Trim the excess fabric! You now have a new seat bottom!

Reupholstering an Armchair

Reupholstering an armchair is a little more challenging. Depending upon its size and decorative features (as found in wing chairs or scroll back arm chairs) you may require extra fabric and a little more patience.
Preparing the Fabric

• Remove all staples or upholstery tacks with your needle nose pliers. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: be careful to remove them all to avoid injuries later.
• Remove all fabric and batting. Try to remove the fabric without ripping it, because you will use these pieces as templates from which to cut your new fabric. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Keep all pieces until the project is complete.
• Lay out the old pieces of fabric on top of your new fabric. Cut around each template, leaving at least two or three inches overhang on all sides. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: When creating the templates, remember not to stretch the fabric and use sewers chalk to avoid ink bleeding through the fabric.
• Place new batting over the bare pieces on the chair, particularly the seat, back, and arms. Staple or tack down with your mallet. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: We sell batting for $4.95 a yard.

Upholstering the Chair Back

• Lay your fabric over the back of the chair. Tuck the fabric into the sides of the chair, and pull through to the back. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Need buttons for tufting, Danny’s can make them for you.
• Holding the top of the fabric taut, staple the fabric to the back of the wood frame.
• Pull the bottom of the fabric up along the back of the chair and staple to the upper bar on the wood frame. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: this would be a good time to have a friend help, pull the fabric tight to avoid creases and puckering.
• Pull the sides of the fabric taut along the back of the chair. Staple to the sides of the wood frame.

Upholstering the Seat

• Drape your fabric over the seat of the chair. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: Danny’s has a full showroom for you to choose your fabrics and if ordered before 3:00 PM, they can be shipped for next day delivery. Most chairs need 7-9 yards of fabric, most sofas 14-16 yards of fabric.
• Pull extra fabric through the frame and underneath the seat.
• Pull the front of the fabric taut beneath the seat frame, and staple.
• Pull the back of the fabric taut beneath the seat frame and staple
• Pull the sides of the fabric taut beneath the seat frame. Pleat and staple down.

Upholstering the Arms

• Lay your fabric over the chair’s arms. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: this is where keeping all the pieces will come in handy. You may need to re-upholster certain pieces torn off the chair or sofa.
• Fold one-third of the fabric (the part closest to the chair back) forwards.
• Pull the fabric taut on either side of the arm and staple to the chair frame.
• Locate the center of the folded part of the fabric. Cut a slit along the center of the fold, right to the end of the fold. This will allow you to wrap the end of the fabric around the arms.

Finishing the Arm Chair

• Attach welting on along the seams, as desired. Danny’s Upholstery Tip: can’t find welting to match? Danny’s Upholstery can. Call to find out how, 757-363-5889.

Custom Furniture Upholstery for Restaurants from Danny’s Upholstery

Most restaurants and hotels in the Hampton Roads area lay a lot of energy on their ambiance. The idea behind this is to draw the customer’s attention towards the establishment where they can unwind and enjoy time with their loved ones, clients or business associates and even all by themselves.

In order to strike the right balance of color and comfort, one needs to complement the ambiance with the right furniture and style. The upholstery of a restaurant plays a premium role in this regard. A restaurants choice in style not only expresses the aesthetic sense and interior quality but also the fine taste of the restaurant and its’ customers.

A quality eating place or a dine-out is a combination of great food, phenomenal service and appealing furniture. Therefore, upholstery plays a vital role in this respect. For this reason, one needs to ensure quality, looks and above all comfort for seating, serving and surrounding areas in an eating place.

Custom furniture upholstery is specially designed and ordered based on customer needs and requirements. The specifications of furniture for restaurants and hotels are generally set by keeping the look and feel of the place in mind. There are numerous upholstery and fabric factors to be kept in mind. These include the location of the eating establishment, the cuisine offered, any particular theme or flavor followed by them, their target demographics, and similar distinctions.

Ask Danny's Upholstery, Can You Upholster Your Auto Seats Yourself

Danny’s Upholstery
Your One Stop Upholstery Shop
4940 Rutherford Rd.
Virginia Beach, VA 23455
757-363-5889

Can You Upholster Your Automobile Seats Yourself? Why you should seek an upholstery specialist’s advice?

Yes you can try to re-upholster your automobile seats yourself, but a small number of us do it as it can be a lot of effort. It is much less difficult to have the experts at an auto upholstery shop do it for you, especially if you are going for a custom look in the spirit of Chip Foose’s Overhaulin’ and Pimp My Ride, or undertaking a classic re-establishment effort. An upholstery shop can also fix and repair seats, frames, and more. Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach offers free estimates, 757-363-5889.

In these budget conscious times, you could be tempted to replace those worn, frayed or torn seats yourself. It doesn't cost tons of money and could satisfy what you are looking to have done.

You may not do as good a job as an upholstery specialist but it will possibly still look better than the old ones. Go and pick out a little fabric. The kind you selected will rely upon your personal taste and your sewing skills. Velvet could be a good selection as it is fairly forgiving of the novice sewer. This is a poor choice of material if you are trying to do a restoration to factory state as it is simply not a material that was used. Naturally, if you are doing something fancier, and want a look similar to what you can get on television (on shows like Chip Foose’s Overhaulin’, NASCAR Angels, and Pimp My Ride), this material wouldn’t be a good choice either.

Whatever material you selected will have to be cut and sewn to size. One way of doing this is to take apart the current covering and using this as a pattern. It's not perfect as you may transfer stretching and other irregularities to the new coverings but it may be the only means you can manage to do it.

If this all seems like excessive work, you could consider just adding new seat covers. It is essential that you choose the correct shape and fit or else they will look dreadful. Consumers can usually purchase custom seat covers for newer vehicle models; however, these will need to be installed using hog rings and may need additional padding.

The customized seat covers at Danny’s Upholstery will take account of the shape of the seat, the head rests and the seat controls. They are a very cost effective method to improve the look of your auto although if you are renovating an extremely old model automobile you might not be able to find a custom fit. Don’t worry, Danny White is a master craftsman in upholstery, he can customize seat covers for all vehicles.

Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach is also an authorized shop for Katzkin Leathers. Katzkin is the source for leather interiors used on hit television shows such as Chip Foose’s Overhaulin’, Pimp My Ride, NASCAR Angels, Wrecks to Riches, Car Wars, and Speed Channel’s Payback. Visit www.katzkin.com , you can easily pick out the specifications for your auto and bring it to Danny’s Upholstery to order and install, or if you just find a picture of what you like Danny can custom create it for you!

Remember though, many answers to this question revolves around what your final goals and desired outcome is. If all you are trying to do is replace something ripped or torn... that is fairly easy, or can be. On the other hand, if you're looking to create something that could compete with Chip Foose’s Overhaulin or Pimp My Ride in the appearance department, you would probably be better served working with a professional. Let Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach, be Your One Stop Upholstery Shop.

Danny's Upholstery Furniture Facts and Holiday Special

Danny’s Upholstery

Holiday Special:
1. 3 Free Cushions with every Sofa Re-upholstery (a $100+ value)
2. 1 Free Cushion with every Chair Re-upholstery (a $30+ value)

Danny’s Upholstery Furniture Facts

Danny’s Upholstery’s customers know that there is a wide selection of upholstered furniture from which to choose. Upholstery furniture can be arranged in different shapes, sizes, and colors to flow with the theme and design of a room. The quality and durability can also vary depending on the piece of furniture.

Upholstery furniture can include beds (headboards), sofas, chairs, ottomans, cushions and more. Upholstery furniture has four basic categories (parts): the frame, the spring system, the cushioning or padding and the final fabric or leather covering. Danny White, master craftsman in upholstery for over 30 years, is going to define each category, since it can relate to your furniture in your home and business.

The Frame

The frame is the “mold” of a piece of furniture and has to be strong and sturdy. Frames are made into many sizes for dining chairs, couches, chairs, stools and more. Many different types of wood are used to build solid foundations and bases. Oak, maple, alder and ash are the most common woods used for quality furniture. The sturdier the frame, the more value your piece will hold. Many times, when purchasing quality furniture, it is more cost effective to reupholster your pieces than to purchase new, as the quality may not be the same. Danny’s Upholstery can do frame repairs on most pieces. Did you know that Danny’s has a pick up and delivery service?

The Spring System

The spring system is added in after the frame is complete and is set in a parallel arrangement within the frame. The spring system has elongated and often Z-shaped sinuous springs extending within the frame. Furniture can also have coil springs, which would be 8-way hand tied for maximum comfort and durability. Both spring systems at times may need to be repaired and Danny’s Upholstery can do that for you. For a free estimate call us at 757-363-5889.

Cushioning and Padding

After the frame and springs are complete, the padding is ready to be added. Foam cushions surrounded with soft polyesters or feathers are then covered and sewn into upholstery fabric or the final covering. The cushions are then placed and tacked into the frame over the spring system. Over time cushions can shrink or deteriorate. Danny’s Upholstery can replace foam cushions and reupholster only the cushions if needed, especially for wicker and hickory furniture. Did you see our holiday special? Take advantage of this by getting your furniture reupholstered and save!

Final Covering

Upholstery fabrics are tightly woven durable fabrics. In some cases, vinyl is used as it is easy to keep clean in high traffic areas. Leather is also used as a final covering since it is so durable. Fabrics come in many colors. Stop by our show room to look at fabric samples. We are open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and Saturday, 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Additional hours available to meet your needs, feel free to give Danny’s Upholstery a call to schedule a time convenient for you!

Danny's Upholstery in Virginia Beach Offers Three Reasons to Consider Seat Recovering

Danny’s Upholstery

Virginia Beach, VA 23455

Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach Offers Three Reasons to Consider Seat Recovering

Having your automobile's seats re-done/re-covered is a fairly big custom auto interior project, but even so, it's normally sensibly priced and well worth doing. You can do anything from a simple material replacement to something more complex, based around Chip Foose’s Overhaulin’ designs, or another big name in the auto-refinishing industry. Whichever means you go, there are three key causes for having your automobile's seats re-done/re-covered, and Danny’s Upholstery will cover them in brief, below:

Danny’s Upholstery Key Cause #1: If you intend to update your automobile and give it a new look, the seats are normally the biggest, most eye catching part of the interior of the vehicle. If you only have the ability to have one thing done, this will make the biggest, most observable difference for the money spent. Perhaps you saw some awesome Chip Foose Designs on television that encouraged you, or maybe you are only looking for a change of pace. Whichever the case, change or repair those seats! You will be glad you did! Did you know that Chip Foose Designs uses Katzkin Leathers on his show and Danny’s Upholstery in Virginia Beach is an authorized dealer in the Hampton Roads area for Katzkin?

Danny’s Upholstery Key Cause #2: If you are restoring a classic auto and intend to return it to original “off the showroom floor” condition, you will almost surely need the services of a master craftsman in upholstery. That's a big, intricately comprehensive job, and not one that lots of people can do on the fly. Again, the seats are a main part of the reinstatement of the interior, and as such, should be a priority. Danny has over 33 years experience meeting the needs for the Hampton Roads, Virginia Beach community. Let Danny’s Upholstery be Your One Stop Upholstery Shop!

Danny’s Upholstery Key Cause #3: If you are taking the benefit of current damage to create a change in your cars interior. Maybe you are not looking to drastically alter the look of your automobile's interior, or maybe you do not prefer to change a thing, but if you have got damage and want to repair the car up and extend its useful life, then re-padding and re-covering the seats will certainly aid you achieve your aim! Many times, we can match original manufacturer materials and repair seat bottoms, backs or just insert panels. This can save you time and money. Most seat repairs can be done in one day. Call Danny’s for a free estimate, 757-363-5889.

Remember custom seat covers are NOT the same thing as purchasing slip covers. Custom seat covers are factory fitted custom covers and are held down with hog rings; just like factory original covers that come when the car is new. When having custom seat covers installed into your automobile, your upholsterer is going to have the opportunity to re-pad and repair any areas that have worn over time. Slip covers merely go over what is already there and are usually held down with Velcro. What we are talking about is having the old upholstery removed and changed/updated with new. Totally different thing!

This is but one of a great number of services that a skilled custom auto interior shop can do for you, and again, you do not have to go chasing fancy stuff like Chip Foose designs or other "out there" customized work; you can keep things as straightforward, or make them as impressive as your imagination allows.
